BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE WALK (terrain level and estimated mileage): Join naturalist and writer Marcia Bonta, her son Dave, and other members of the Juniata Valley Audubon Society for a 4.5-mile walk with about 600 feet of elevation gain in the 650-acre Plummer's Hollow Private Nature Reserve, featuring mature forest of several types as well as old meadow and shrubland habitat. We'll share some of our perspectives on forest health, climate change and biodiversity issues, and keep an eye out for migratory birds and fall foliage. Bring a lunch.

Jen's background is in forest ecology (UVM) and she currently teaches GIS and Environmental Science at Villanova. She has led numerous walks in the area and has worked with the American Chestnut Foundation and Natural Lands on forest conservation and restoration. We'll be walking on natural paths through the hills and valley at Welkinweir - wear comfortable, sturdy shoes.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE WALK (terrain level and estimated mileage): This easy 4.7-mile hike will start at the Hyner View State Park using the Garby section of the Donut Hole Trail. From there the hike will take the Cleveland Hollow Trail to create a loop back to Hyner View. The terrain will be mostly flat with very little incline. This hike will begin and end at Hyner View Scenic Vista, where you can see vast distances both upstream and downstream over the West Branch of the Susquehanna River and surrounding mountains. We will be enjoying the fall foliage and talking about tree identification. Tree ID booklets will be passed out before the hike.

Join us as we explore part of the 41 acres of lovely, wooded forest at Marsh Conservation Easement. This property is not usually open to the public, so this is a great opportunity to come and check it out! This property does have some steep inclines, so please wear shoes with good traction and grip. Please register by noon on October 3rd, 2025.

The property features an access drive that that we will walk as a loop trail. The walk will be on relatively flat, but occasionally uneven, terrain. Please dress for the weather, brambles, and possibly soggy ground. Blaze orange clothing is recommended as the property is open to the public for hunting. Water bottles and snacks will be provided.

Terrain will be mostly flat including some rocks, with a moderate climb during mile 3 and descent during mile 4. The leader will discuss the history of the entire A.T. as well as that of the Trail in the Cumberland Valley. Please remember to wear hiking shoes or boots, and bring water & snacks. Because of A.T. rules, registration will be limited to 25.

Join Bureau of Forestry staff for a 'Walk in Penn's Woods' as we take an easy, 1.5 mile walk over rolling terrain that travels through forest that was affected by fire nearly a year ago. Learn about Forestry's work throughout Michaux as we observe the effects of fire on the landscape and see first-hand how disturbance-based ecology can be beneficial to forest health.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION (terrain level and estimated mileage): The trail is about 1 mile in length and takes about an hour or so to walk. It starts on State Forest Land beside the PA Lumber Museum; crosses Commissioner Run onto museum property and ends at the Lumber Museum log pond. The trail is level and wide on the state forest side. A stroller wouldn’t have an issue on that side for half of the walk, but would be difficult on the museum side of the trail. The bridge across Commissioner Run has 4 steps on either side and the trail in narrower. Children routinely use the trail as part of school and scout visits. It is a pretty easy walk for most folks.

WALK IN PENN’S WOODS: Eagles Mere to Sonestown on Narrow-Gauge Railroad Bed

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Walk from Eagles Mere to Sonestown via the Eagles Mere Narrow-Gauge Railroad bed built in 1892 and abandoned in 1926. Along the 9-mile walk participants will learn about the railroad’s history and see Castle Rock and the three-tiered Winonah Waterfalls.
Other highlights will be the area of Shanersburg Curve; the Bully Run trestle crossing and curve near the falls; Gayelen Park, where Eagles Mere guests would go for cool summer picnics; the Big Run spur that went to the Big Run Manufacturing Company just north of Sonestown; and in Sonestown, the sites of the Sonestown Narrow-Guage Railroad station, stave mill, and clothespin factory.
We will also see examples of forest management as well as impacts to the forest from the loss of white ash, threats from invasive plants, and Beech Leaf and Beech Bark disease.
This walk is for more experienced hikers and will cover 8-9 miles. The walk will begin at The Pond in Eagles Mere, along Route 42. There should be plenty of parking available. The walk will also include four stream crossings requiring wading through water. In addition, there are several rocky washouts from recent heavy rain in August. Release of liability forms must be signed by all participants.
All participants are asked to bring a packed lunch, snacks and drinks for the 4-hour hike, and to coordinate their own transportation back to Eagles Mere. In Sonestown, cars may be parked on Fairman Road near the intersection with Route 220 just north of town, or at the ball field. Participants will have the option to gather after the hike at the Sonestown Country Inn to debrief and then tour the Williamsport North Branch Railroad train station in Sonestown.
This walk is on private land. Arrangements have been made with the private landowners for permission to walk this trail for this day only. Participants are also reminded that this walk is during archery hunting season so orange attire is recommended. Well behaved dogs are welcome.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE WALK (terrain level and estimated mileage): The walk will cover a wide variety of habitat types (ancient oaks, black cherry, pine, sycamores...) as well as pollinator fields and early successional forests. It will cover approximately 2 miles and include about 200' of elevation changes. We will discuss the challenges our forest faces as well as efforts to help restore a healthy ecosystem. Well-mannered dogs are welcome.
ACCESSIBILITY OF WALK: Strollers with large wheels capable of riding over grass and dirt paths up and down hills should be OK as the trails do not have stairs to climb. However, based on the relatively steep slopes in some places, wheelchairs are not able to be safely accommodated.
