WALK IN PENN’S WOODS: Slash Wall Enclosure Fence

DATE: Sunday October 6, 2024

TIME: 1:00PM- 2:00 PM

WALK ADDRESS &/OR GPS COORDINATES OF WHERE THE WALK WILL START:

Sullivan County Court House Parking Lot, Laporte PA

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE WALK (terrain level and estimated mileage):

An informative walk in the Laporte area to a Slash Wall Deer Enclosure Fence will allow the public to see a new concept in silviculture and forestry. Wayne Bender and Marc Lewis, Pennsylvania Forestry Association board members, will lead the walk to discuss forest management, Forest Stewardship Certification, and the goals and benefits of the slash wall. This slash wall was built just over a year ago, so the regeneration benefits will be visible to the walkers. Tim Fenstermacher, forester for Dwight Lewis Lumber, will provide walkers details about the wall construction and its impact on the forest regeneration. The walk is approximately 1-mile round trip, but access to its starting point will require high clearance vehicles. Participants will meet at the Sullivan County Court House Parking lot at 1:00pm and then carpool a short distance to the access log road. The walk should be completed by 2:30pm. Foresters normally allow the tops of trees, or slash, to remain throughout the area of a recent harvest. The slash becomes a natural deer fence keeping the deer out and allowing for the new growth or regeneration of the forest. Whitetail deer love to eat new seedlings as they browse for food, especially in the winter when there is snow cover. They eat 6-8 pounds of seedlings and low hanging tree branches every day. When deer density is higher than food habitat, deer will over-browse an area making regeneration difficult for the landowner. An expensive but highly effective alternative is to install an 8-foot wire deer fence. However, recent research is showing benefits to a less costly alternative. A wall made of the slash around the perimeter of a harvest provides a high barrier to the deer but also encourages other wildlife habitat such as ruffled grouse and other birds that desire an early succession forest. The wall provides safe habitat for small game such as fox and rabbit. Black bears have also been known to burrow into the slash wall to hibernate. Come join us on this short but informative walk in Penn's Woods.

ACCESSIBILITY OF WALK: This walk is not recommended for wheelchairs or strollers are considered accessible. Pets are permitted provided they comply with all PA Leash Laws.

REGISTRATION: Please contact Wayne Bender at dwbender1@gmail.com to register. Pre-registration is required to assure adequate parking and transportation. Participation is limited but a second walk could be offered at 3:00pm if needed.
