WALK IN PENN'S WOODS: A Hike in Plummer's Hollow

Join naturalist and writer Marcia Bonta, her son Dave, and other members of the Juniata Valley Audubon Society for a 4.5-mile walk with about 600 feet of elevation gain in the 650-acre Plummer's Hollow Private Nature Reserve. The walk features mature forest of several types as well as old meadow and shrubland habitat. Participants will discuss forest health, climate change and biodiversity issues and keep an eye out for migratory birds and fall foliage. Bring a lunch.

Explore the woods at Welkinweir with Jen Santoro while traversing the Horse-Shoe Trail. Jen's background is in forest ecology and she currently teaches GIS and Environmental Science at Villanova. The walk uses natural paths through the hills and valley at Welkinweir, so comfortable, sturdy shoes are recommended.

Experience an introduction to Tree ID through PSU-DuBois Wildlife Technology Program on a student-led hike at Camp Mountain Run Boy Scout Facilities. Participants will enjoy a custom 1.25-mile hike featuring approximately 20 species of woody plants, including native and non-native trees, shrubs, and vines. This education-focused hike spans terrain from wet bottomland floodplains to gently rolling, moderately dry hillside slopes that require sturdy footwear and agility.

WALK IN PENN'S WOODS: Donut Hole/Cleveland Hollow Trails at Hyner View State Park

This easy 4.7-mile hike starts at Hyner View State Park using the Garby section of the Donut Hole Trail. The route takes the Cleveland Hollow Trail to create a loop back to Hyner View. Terrain is mostly flat with very little incline, and the group will enjoy fall foliage and talk about tree identification. Tree ID booklets will be passed out before the hike.

As part of the statewide Walk in Penn's Woods offerings, FSF invites participants to take a walk at FSF's new Sparta Sportsmen's Community Forest in Spartansburg, PA. The property features an access drive that will be used as a loop trail on relatively flat but occasionally uneven terrain. Dress for weather, brambles, and possibly soggy ground. Blaze orange clothing is recommended because the property is open to the public for hunting. Water bottles and snacks will be provided.

Come take a walk on one of the French Creek Conservancy conservation easement properties and explore part of the 41 acres of lovely wooded forest at Marsh Conservation Easement. This property is not usually open to the public. It does have some steep inclines, so shoes with good traction and grip are recommended.

A six mile out and back walk on the Appalachian Trail to celebrate a century of the A.T. Pace will be moderate, a bit more than 2 mph. Terrain will be mostly flat including some rocks, with a moderate climb during mile 3 and descent during mile 4. Bring hiking shoes or boots, water, and snacks. Because of A.T. rules, registration will be limited to 25.

Forest Technology students and instructors will lead the walk.

The trail is about 1 mile in length and takes about an hour or so to walk. The trail is level and wide on the state forest side. A stroller would be fine on that side for half the walk, but the museum side is narrower and includes a bridge with steps.

This walk is on private land with special permission for this day only. Orange attire is recommended because this occurs during archery hunting season.
