This year marks the second time Jim Kessler has received the Outstanding Tree Farm Inspector of the Year award; his first was in 1996. Jim is a service forester for DCNR Bureau of Forestry in Wyoming and Susquehanna Counties. He has been with the Bureau for 35 years and has been a strong supporter of the American Tree Farm System. This year he inspected over 21 Tree Farms.
One thing that makes Jim an outstanding Tree Farm inspector is the fact that he owns a Tree Farm himself. Jim grows Christmas trees, produces maple syrup, builds and maintains recreational trails, and sells timber on his own Tree Farm. These real-life experiences facilitate his relationships with other forest landowners. As part of his award, Jim won an all-expense-paid trip to the National Tree Farm Convention in Columbus, Ohio this past October.
